A language is a wonderful thing to waste. And there's nothing more awkward or more entertaining than a truly bad translation. Here, pre-packaged for your enjoyment, are some of the choicest morsels.

• Who the trees are thick! A French-English phrasebook from Portugal, published in 1855.

• The Flag Star-Decorated with Spangles. An automatic translator (systran) wreaks havoc with well-known song lyrics.
